Thanks for visiting our experiment with Google Maps! We are only posting 1 weeks worth of data at a time due to the excessive loading times of Internet Explorer and Firefox. Firefox is the preferred browser for this data-laden map! Explorer takes about 5 seconds to load the map and is sluggish when navigating the map. The map data was split up into the 7 different Police Districts to help with loading times - enjoy!

Great Map! Please keep it up!
love the map -definitely keep it up!
Thanks for the feedback! I was thinking about hosting the maps on a dedicated site and moving the data into a database. That way, users could go back in time as well as select the types of crimes they wish to have mapped.

As they say: Awareness is one way prevent being a victim. I'm emailing all my people to let them know about the site.
Question: Is there any way to get the crime data to scroll for the crimes in which the content is longer than the space alloacted allows?
David: Unfortunately, many times the data from crimwatch.com is truncated. The description of the crime is often incomplete, and I believe in all cases, the full text is displayed in the pop-up on the map. At least the truncated desription is enough to get the idea of the nature of the crime!
This map is very helpful. Please do keep it up. And I think it would be a great idea to allow time based and crime type based searches. Thanks for putting this together.
Can I ask where you are getting the data for these crimes? This is great stuff.
Moxie: Data comes from Crimereports.com
You can sign up for the email list to get up-to-date reports.
Also, we're waiting for the DC gov to release the RSS feed of crime data. Here is more info. As soon as it is released, we'll incorporate the new data source into DC Crime Maps.
Do you mean the email list at Crimereports.com?
Anon: yes, the email reports from crimereports.com

I figured I'd make a contribution to the residents of the city by building this Google Map to show people what's happening in their neighborhood.
